4 PART SERIES
Emergent Curriculum Training
Training for Developing Supports and Programs
Building a program based on children’s interests and their development supports the children’s abilities to reach their potential and development. This four part series will teach participants how to use tools to create a developmental appropriate program based on children’s interest and development. This four part series can be taken in its entirety or separately depending on participants needs. It is applicable to Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers & School Age children.
PART 1: OBSERVING & RECORDING
Watching and observing what children do and say can be an effective way to get to know them. Early Childhood Educators who watch and record children’s facial expressions, body language, oral language, and actions learn about the children’s interests and development. During this workshop participants will learn about types of observations and observational tools. This information will enable participants to develop programs which focus on the children’s interests and development. Participants will also learn how to create, develop and maintain child portfolios.
PART 2: DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING
Understanding children’s development allows the Early Childhood Educator to ensure the implementation of developmental appropriate practices. During this workshop participants will learn how to use the Nipissing District Developmental Screen and/or Ages and Stages, how to identify developmental areas which need extra attention, and how to use this information in the children’s daily program planning.
PART 3: EMERGENT CURRICULUM
When all the pieces of the previous two workshops are put together the result is the beginnings of an Emergent Curriculum for children. Part three of this series adds the finishing touches where participants will learn how to use webbing, extend play, and how to find and create resources to support children’s development and interests. Participants will also learn how to use different types of photography to capture children’s play and project work for future reflection and discussion.
PART 4: ONE DAY FOLLOW-UP
Putting all the pieces together to create an Emergent Curriculum for children will have different out comes for each playroom team of teachers. Some teams will start out slowly and deliver a blend of theme based and emergent programming and other teams will immediately deliver an Emergent Curriculum. Part four of the Emergent Curriculum Series is designed to provide each playroom team with valuable feedback to support their ongoing process of emergent curriculum. Penny Deeter will come to the child care program for a full day to observe each playroom and provide feedback to each team on their present progress and how to set future goals.
