School Age Training Orientation

 

Training for School Age

The school age orientation training includes at total of 9 modules. The training will prepare School Age staff for working with children 5 to 12 years of age. The training will be delivered by in classroom training and mentoring in a school age program.

PART 1: Effective Supervision

Effective supervision reduces the risk of harm to children by preventing injuries and accidents. It also promotes positive, responsive, and intentional learning environments for children and child care providers.

MODULE 1 - 2 hours

  • In classroom instruction on effective supervision for school age children

MODULE 2 - 4 hours

  • Staff will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate Effective Supervision skills learn in the classroom. 

Cost: $950


PART 2: Child Guidance

The goal for guiding children’s behaviour is to assist children in developing respect, self-control, self confidence and sensitivity in their interactions with others. Guiding children’s behaviour is an ongoing process, which takes time and consistency. 

MODULE 1 - 6 hours

  • In classroom instruction on school age child guidance

MODULE 2 - 8 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate that they are able to demonstrate the skills they learn in the classroom. 

Cost: $2,225


PART 3: Program Planning

Using the Emergent Curriculum philosophy to create programs based on children's interests, needs and abilities is critical to creating a quality school age program. Observing, documenting, creating and follow through are the crucial steps to creating a program which will meet the needs of children 5 to 12 years of age.

MODULE 1 - 6 hours

  • In classroom instruction on program planning.

MODULE 2 - 8 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate that they are able to demonstrate the skills they learn in the classroom. 

Cost: $2,225


PART 4: Partnering with families

Communicating with parents involves a two-way sharing of information and helps to develop a common understanding to ensure children's needs are met on a daily basis. Effective communication helps families and staff to build a trusting partnership and develop honest and respectful relationships.

MODULE 1 - 2 hours

  • In classroom instruction on parent communications.

MODULE 2 - 2 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate that they are able to demonstrate the skills they learn in the classroom. 

Cost: $600


PART 5: Documentation

Child Care Licensing and Accreditation require detailed documentation to ensure the school age program is in compliance with all regulations. All documentation must be filled out accurately and in a timely manner to ensure on going compliance with accreditation and licensing regulations and standards.

MODULE 1 - 2 hours

  • In classroom instruction on the right way to document.

MODULE 2 - 4 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate that they are able to demonstrate the skills they learn in the classroom.

PART 6: Professional Communication

Professional communication in the workplace supports an organizations productivity and to ensure they operate effectively. An organization can experience an increase in morale, productivity and staff commitment if everyone is able to communicate professional and effectively.

MODULE 1 - 2 hours

  • In classroom instruction on professional communication.

MODULE 2 - 2 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate that they are able to demonstrate the skills they learn in the classroom.

PART 7: Licensing

A licence is required under the Child Care Licensing Act to operate a child care program that provides care for seven or more children. The Child Care Licensing Regulation sets out the minimum standards which must be met in a licensed child care program to ensure that the health, safety and developmental needs of children are met.

MODULE 1 - 2 hours

  • In classroom instruction on the child care licensing act.

MODULE 2 - 2 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate that they are able to demonstrate the skills they learn in the classroom.

PART 8: Child Care Accreditation

Child care accreditation in Alberta is a voluntary process through which licensed and approved child care programs (day care programs, out-of-school care programs and family day home agencies) can demonstrate that they meet the accreditation standards of excellence which are over and above the provincial licensing regulations and family day home standards.

MODULE 1 - 4 hours

  • In classroom instruction on the 6 accreditation standards.

PART 9: Daily Routines

Daily routines help children feel secure and comfortable. They help children understand the expectations of the environment reduce behaviour challenges and result in higher rates of child engagement.

MODULE 1 - 2 hours

  • In classroom instruction on daily routines.

MODULE 2 - 2 hours

  • Students will work in program with a mentor to demonstrate they are able to use the skills they learn in the classroom.

Cost: $630

The cost for each module differs based on the length of in classroom and mentorship training.  All 9 modules must be completed by the student and a certificate will be provided upon completion.
